Viognier

2022

“As is virtually guaranteed with any and all wines from this unique vineyard, the Viognier has multiple dimensions, densely packed fruits, exceptional detail and extraordinary length. Pollen and candied citrus, orange creamsicle and key lime pie flavors veer into banana and papaya as it takes the palate on a roller coaster ride. As with previous vintages, this 2022 captures the fruit (both flesh and rind), botanical highlights and precision focus of the best Viogniers I’ve ever had. And goes the extra mile, extending the finish while adding further details of mineral, matchstick and metal. Absolutely extraordinary in every way.”

“Wildly impressive, this Viognier comes from the earliest plantings in the WeatherEye Vineyard by Washington, visionary viticulturist Ryan Johnson; the fruit is fully allocated to the Liminal brand—gorgeous aromatics of lemon curd and honeyed ginger, dried meadow white flowers and Madagascar vanilla bean. The palate shows a rich texture owing to the 8 months on lees. This is an opulent white wine, but it retains a brilliance of structure and lift. Lemon oil, cake batter, and macerated peaches. This threads a needle where most domestic Viognier falls flat. It offers the richness and opulence of Viognier while remaining fresh and upright.”

“From the renowned WeatherEye Vineyard perched high on Red Mountain, this 2022 Viognier showcases an ethereal balance of texture and vibrancy. Aromas of spring white flowers, fresh cedary herbs, and a whisper of citrus zest lead into a palate bursting with ripe honeydew and white peach notes. The wine’s eight months on lees in neutral French oak impart a creamy richness, while the bright acidity lends a graceful tension. Fresh and layered, this Viognier is a true expression of its terroir and promises elegance for the next decade. 47 cases produced. Highly recommended.”

“Coming from the WeatherEye Vineyard this beautiful new 2022 Viognier comes from a parcel of land high atop Red Mountain. This is wonderfully textured stuff with honeysuckle water and hints of rosemary alongside rich honeydew melon and shades of juicy nectarine on the palate. Fresh and lithe with a smooth texture and great underlying tension, enjoy now and over the next eight plus years to come. Drink 2024-2032.”

“The 2022 Viognier High Canyon Series WeatherEye Vineyard entices with a gorgeous blend of confectionary spice, lemon sorbet, chamomile and yellow apples. Silken and weighty in feel yet energetic and spry, this pleases the palate with its ripe orchard fruits as a saturation of salty minerals adds tactile grip. Zesty acidity keeps the mouth watering as the 2022 tapers off with medium length and vivid notes of ripe nectarine and raw almond that linger on and on. Superb.”

“Fermented and aged on lees for 8 months in neutral French oak, this is a vibrantly aromatic wine, with focused notes of honeysuckle, peach, apricot, and tangerine zest – immediately identifiable as Viognier. Full-bodied, rounded, richly textured stone fruit flavors follow. The flavors are penetrating and intense but exquisitely balanced. A layered mouthfeel ups the interest, as does a long, long finish. It brings the variety’s richness, but, unlike most, it doesn’t bring the heat along with it. It’s a standout – the best Viognier I’ve had from the Washington side of the Columbia Valley. Critic’s Choice.”

“Viognier is my siren, and I fell hard for this one. Aromas of tangerines and green tea with lemon are just the start of this entrapment. The texture provided by eight months on the lees is an irresistible accompaniment to the wine’s pineapple and lemon curd flavors. The wine’s acidity snapped me out of my Viognier daydream. Editors’ Choice.”

“From a vineyard with a burgeoning cult following, this Viognier shows nuance and freshness, balancing plenty of depth. Aromas of white hawthorn flowers balanced against notes of Spanish olive skin and almond notes. The palate is fresh and lively, yet plenty phenolic. Flavours of pear skin, savoury herbs, and seaspray make way for roasted almond flavours and a depth of intensity on the finish accented by grilled lemon peel.”

“While the potential for reds was obvious at WeatherEye before the first vines were planted, it’s the whites that have brought the greatest intrigue. Aged nine months in neutral oak with light bâttonage for the first three months, the aromas here offer initially subdued notes of honeysuckle, jasmine, fresh and dried herb, and white peach. The stone fruit flavors bring intensity and focus while remaining exquisitely balanced. The finish sails. It’s a complete standout offering of this variety.”

“More of a whisper than a shout, but with much to say, the 2021 Viognier WeatherEye Vineyard High Canyon Series blossoms with raw almond, white flowers and candied ginger, complementing vivid apricot and lime aromas. Silky and enveloping, this washes across the palate in creamy textural waves showing ripe orchard fruits and candied citrus tones. The 2021 becomes mineral through the finale, leaving the mouth watering as savory spice nuances slowly fade. This is an outstanding interpretation of Viognier from one of the Red Mountains’ most exciting locations.”

“Pure, fresh and vibrant, the 2021 Viognier WeatherEye Vineyard is aromatic and delights with lively floral notes before hints of cereal grains and sautéed apples waft from the glass. The palate embraces almond skin flavors with a broad texture and succulent mouthfeel before a kiss of phenolic bitterness dances across the long, food-friendly finish, enhancing the wine’s complexity. Give it a try. This Viognier aged nine months in neutral French oak.”

“The gorgeous and also very generous 2020 Liminal ‘WeatherEye Vineyard’ Viognier offers sweet honeysuckle, lychee, and roasted pineapple with suggestions of ripe cantaloupe on the nose. The palate is very fresh and lively, with serious texture. The underlying salinity is truly outstanding here, as is the lip-smacking acidity that flows through the core of the Viognier. With more air this shows even wilder components of yarrow and white rose water. Enjoy at a slightly warmer temperature to take in the thrilling set of flavors and aromatics. Drink 2022-2030.”

“Fruit that comes from the impeccable WeatherEye Vineyard, the 2020 High Canyon Viognier displays a golden apple core with a honey rim in the glass. It’s aged for 9 months in neutral French oak barrels to allow the fruit to shine without any distractions. Rich and decadent on the nose, it gifts fetching aromas of grilled pineapple, honeysuckle flower, honey-coated Bartlett pear, and blanched almonds. Rich and oily on the palate with elevated levels of acidity and a firm full-body mouthfeel, it gives this wonderful mushroom and earthy quality on the front palate.”

“All from the WeatherEye Vineyard, the 2020 Viognier is made in a bright, juicy, almost racy style. Giving up bright green apple, tart apricot, and crushed stone notes, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, bright, clean acidity, good balance, and solid length on the finish. This racy, vibrant Viognier will keep for 3-4 years.”

“This gorgeous Viognier from Liminal (a second label from Avennia Wines’ founder/winemaker Chris Peterson) is a fresh, mineral-driven stunner with just enough weight on the mid palate to remind you it’s a Viognier but without the overpowering or cloying nutmeg and floral aromas found in many other examples. The white blossom notes are there, but linger in the background, blending with notes of chalk, Asian pear, almonds and vanilla.”

“Another gorgeous Viognier by winemaker Chris Peterson, this one coming from the WeatherEye Vineyard of Red Mountain and rests for 9 months in neutral French oak barrels. Aromas of honey-coated yellow pear, white flower blossoms and vanilla seeds are prominent on the nose while the luscious and rich palate delivers some tropical and toasted cashew notes with medium plus acidity, a structured and full body, and a lengthy finish. Drink 2021-2026.”

“Grapes from a site high up on the mountain compose this wine. Its aromas are reserved, with notes of peach, nectarine and almond skin. The palate is light on its feet, with an ethereal feel. The finish is downright juicy. It’s a unique take on this variety in the state.”

“Notes of crisp pear, mixed grapefruit and vanilla bean move from the nose through the palate with a mouth-watering, pithy presence carrying through a long finish. This is a beautiful expression of Viognier with plenty of tension, nice focus, a savoury quality and just enough fruit to be thirst-quenching and delicious. Worth seeking out. Distinctive.”

“The 2018 ‘WeatherEye Vineyard’ Viognier is a stunning effort by the talented Chris Peterson. Honeysuckle and pear tones collide with smoky minerals and shades of orange blossom that all take shape in the glass. The palate is fresh and beautifully textured. Smooth throughout the drinking experience this effortlessly glides across the mid-palate. Vanilla cream and toasted hazelnut tones combine with ripe banana and mango tones giving this plenty of exotic appeal. Dense, with great viscosity, I can see this cellaring well for another eight years. Drink 2020-2027.”

“This is the inaugural vintage of this wine, coming from high up on Red Mountain. Aromas of pear, peach, lees and mineral are followed by textured fruit flavors that show a strong sense of vibrancy and, dare I say, minerality. The intensity, balance and length are impressive. It focuses on lees expression and texture rather than sheer varietal purity.”
